Safety&TechnicalData HOSE FlexibilityandBendRadius (REPRINTEDFROMRMAHOSEHANDBOOKIP-2SIXTHEDITION1996) Flexibilityandminimumbendradiusareimportantfactorsinhosedesignandselectionifitisknownthatthe hosewillbesubjectedtosharpcurvaturesinnormaluse.Whenbentatanangletoosharp,hosemaykinkor flatteninthecross-section.Thereinforcementmayalsobeundulystressedordistortedandthehoselife shortened. Adequateflexibilitymeansthehoseshouldbeabletoconformtothesmallestanticipatedbendradiuswithout overstress.Theminimumbendradiusisgenerallyspecifiedforeachhoseinthiscatalog.Thisistheradiusto whichthehosecanbebentinservicewithoutdamageorappreciablyshorteningitslife.Theradiusismeasured totheinsideofthecurvature. Formulatodetermineminimumhoselengthgivenhosebendradiusanddegreeofbendrequired: A 360� x2B=L where: =(Pi)3.14 Example:Tomakea60�bendatahoses'ratedminimumbendradiusof6.25"... 60 360 x2x3.14x6.25=6.54" Thus,thebendmustbemadeoverapproximately6�inchesofhoselength.Thebendradiususedmustbe equaltoorgreaterthantheratedminimumbendradius.Bendingthehosetoasmallerbendradiusthan minimummaykinkthehoseandresultindamageandearlyfailure.
